C&O 2789

Help C&O 2789 Steam Again.!

Folks, there is really not a great deal of news to report at this time. Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum is, as always looking for the ways-and-means to bank roll the complete restoration of C&O No. 2789. Currently the locomotive is housed inside the railroad museum's backshop building. Most all of the locomotives' appliances have been removed for cleaning and testing. Much of this work is yet to be done. All boiler tubing has been removed from the boiler, and new boiler tubes have been procured and are on site for future installation.

The boiler alone needs an estimated $7,000 in repairs to its back tube sheet. The right side sheet inside the firebox is estimated to need $20-25,000 in repairs. HVRM would like to be able to raise the funding for these repairs and then proceed to other areas that need attention. The locomotive's boiler is very much repairable, but very expensive for a small organization at the same time. HVRM's policy is and will always be to move forward on a project with funds in hand. Until sufficient funding is raised, what can be done to preserve the locomotive and its components will be done.

Thank you for your interest in C&O No. 2789, and thank you for dropping into the HVRM website. We invite you to come out to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum to look over No. 2789.

Currently the 2789 has several of its major components removed for work and repair. As you will see in the 2789 photo gallery below, the steamer is in good hands. The 2789 was finally able to rest under a roof for the first time in the summer of 1995. The back shops building was donated by McGill Manufacturing of Valparasio, Indiana in 1993. The building was moved in 1994. The 60'x100' steel structure was reconstructed by museum personnel in the winter of 1994-95.

This is a look at the front boiler and headlamp area of the 2789. Yes, that is the original headlamp of the 2789.

Here is a view of the boiler with the tubing removed for restoration work on the 2789.

Ever wondered what the fireman saw, while working.? Well here is a cab view of the boiler. NOTE: the automatic coal feeder.

Well with heavy restoration, the 2789's cab was removed from the locomotive for more restoration.

The brake stand has been pulled from the standing pipe so other work can be done to the engine. Hopefully soon, it will be upright again and in working order.

Finally we see a working drawing of the 2789's linkage. This is Lima Superpower.
